Look to this year’s Passages, the movie in which Ben Whishaw and Franz Rogowski play lovers on the rocks who, following a breakup, fuck sensually, in artfully shot scenes which make you catch your breath. It's also sexy, which feels strangely unfamiliar despite the fact the sex scene is making something of a comeback. The sex especially, visceral and unvarnished, underscores just how false fictional-Firstman's social media presence is, even if the messaging is ever so slightly on the nose. The nudity, and Firstman's overt, uncensored sexuality, then, is the pendulum swinging in the other direction, a counterbalance. In the movie, we see Firstman speaking to his Instagram followers in the Influencer Voice: shrill like child-speak, and appropriately condescending. It's not a coincidence that Rotting in the Sun centrally satirises the racket of Instagram influencing, putting a light to its shallow fakery.
